Ariel was apparently too "delicate" to do the horrible things Sycorax commanded, so she had a fit and imprisoned Ariel in the cleft of a pine tree, where he stayed rather stuck for twelve years. That's when Prospero came to the island to find the loud, sad, unearthly moans of Ariel coming from a tree. By that time, Sycorax was long dead, and it was Prospero's magic that freed Ariel from the tree. That's when he committed Ariel to his service, with the promise of eventual liberty.

Verse 2 of our text says, "Out of Zion, the perfection ofbeauty, God shines forth." We will talk more next week about thesetting, the scene of judgment, and why God is calling the heavensand the earth to listen to his judgment over Israel. But today Iwant us just to focus on this term Zion. "Out of Zion, theperfection of beauty, God shines forth." What is Zion? And why isit such a rich and hope-filled word for Christians?

The answer is that there is a Zion whose citizenship is notearthly. Psalm 87:5 says the Most High himself is establishing thisZion by declaring with sovereign freedom and with saving effect:"This one was born there." This one in Minneapolis was born inZion. This one in Moscow was born in Zion. This one in Jakarta wasborn in Zion. This one in Kankan was born in Zion. God ispopulating Zion with foreigners of every people and tribe andtongue and nation.

But what does this mean in New Testament terms? Galatians 4:26says something amazingly similar: "The Jerusalem above is free, andshe is our mother." We have been conceived and born in the heavenlyJerusalem. In other words we have all been born once in someearthly city. And that birth has simply made us flesh and blood andgiven us a citizenship in some country here on earth. But if wewant to know God and be with God in his city, if we want to be apart of that future kingdom of peace and joy and love andrighteousness where God rules from Zion, then we have to be bornfrom above. We have to have a second, spiritual birth. We have tohave our citizenship in heaven (Philippians 3:20) and in theJerusalem above. Our second birth certificate has to say, "This onewas born in Zion." "Truly, truly I say to you, unless a person isborn from above he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3).

Ea, Enki, and the younger gods fight against Tiamat futilely until, from among them, emerges the champion Marduk who swears he will defeat Tiamat. Marduk defeats Quingu and kills Tiamat by shooting her with an arrow which splits her in two; from her eyes flow the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Out of Tiamat's corpse, Marduk creates the heavens and the earth, he appoints gods to various duties and binds Tiamat's eleven creatures to his feet as trophies (to much adulation from the other gods) before setting their images in his new home. He also takes the Tablets of Destiny from Quingu, thus legitimizing his reign. 041b061a72
